Magic and Mayhem – The making of Harry Potter

Trimble Muggles visit to Warner Brother's Studio Tour London - The making of Harry Potter.

Published – 2nd April 2022

Entrance Hall with amazing Dragon hanging from the ceiling above our heads.

Magic and Mayhem.

Harry Potter movie’s and some of the best loved movies of our generation and getting to go behind the scenes was definitely on our bucket list of places to visit so when we got the opportunity, we jumped at it.

We planned this trip in advance after my son mentioned he would like to visit the studios, and being a Harry Potter fan myself I was happy to book it.

So for his 14th birthday we took him and his younger sister (another HP fan) to The Warner Brother’s studio tour – The making of Harry Potter which I was just as excited as they were to visit.

I booked the tickets in January as I believe they only release tickets so many months in advance.

When you go on the official website Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter (wbstudiotour.co.uk) there are different packages that you can book and we chose the Ticket and Hotel package which included a 1 night stay in the Hemel Hempstead Holiday Inn.

In total it cost £312 for 4 of us including tickets, 1 night stay in hotel with full English and continental breakfast.

Booked and paid, all we had to do now was eagerly wait for the date.

March 18th 2022 Our date with the wizards arrived.

On the morning of the 18th we drove down from where we live in the North West of the UK to Hemel Hempstead which was just over 3 hours drive but it was an easy drive on the M1 motorway for the majority of the drive.

The kids were happy watching programmes on their mobile phone’s whilst me on my husband rocked out to the radio! (imagine Wayne’s World and you’ll get the picture.

We arrived at the hotel for about 2pm so had an hour to chill out and the kids got changed into their Harry Potter clothes ready.

My youngest Bella wearing her Gryffindor robe and tie and Cameron wearing his new Quidditch team captain hoodie which is personalised with Trimble 14 on the back as it was a birthday gift from us.

Cameron loves his hoodie which we bought from Amazon Gryffindor Harry Potter Hoodie which was £29.99 and came with free personalisation which made it even more special.

Enter the making of Harry Potter

We arrived at the studios 15 minutes early.

It was only a short drive from the hotel and we were directed to a parking space and walked to the entrance.

Inside you go through bag checks and metal detectors, the security is pretty high in this place.

Then you enter into a huge room with the amazing and absolutely massive dragon high above our heads and lots of Harry Potter pictures and there was a set advertising the new Fantastic Beasts movie and some of the characters costumes on display.

The tour starts and your ushered through a winding narrow hallway with lots of posters and life size cut outs of the characters as well as the bedroom cupboard under the stairs which makes you wonder how Harry managed to sleep in there, its not very big at all.

There is a quick talk with a surround video of people talking about there visits and even JK Rowling says a few things.

I won’t tell you everything as wouldn’t want to completely spoil it for you if you visit.

Once your into the Great Hall you can explore the exhibition at your own pace.

The Great Hall of Hogwarts is amazing to see as this was probably one of the most featured sets in all the movies. With 2 very long wooden tables and benches, This is also the room where all the different house uniforms are displayed.

The studios are in 2 buildings which take roughly 3 hours to walk around and see everything as its massive and there’s just so much on display, the detail is absolutely breath taking.

There’s lots of interactive things to do as well. The kids will love learning how to get a broom to fly up to their hand by saying “UP” and walking onto the Hogwarts express.

There are also plenty of photo opportunities as you walk round so make sure your camera is fully charged as you will end up taking 100’s of pictures.

You can also have your photo taken with the green screen behind so your mimicking the actual scenes that you see in the movies but these are all at an extra cost.

What AMAZED me!!

Gringotts Wizarding Bank -operated by Goblins, the founding Goblin named Gringott opened the back in 1474.

The main thing that really struck me is how much detail goes into EVERYTHING when they made these movies.

Everything was designed with such detail and creativity.

From the costumes and the monsters to the small things like individual posters, labels on all the small bottles, the sweet wrappers, literally every tiny detail is well thought out and designed and made with such intricacy its fascinating to see and must of take ages.

These are the things that we don’t even think about when watching the movies but seeing everything laid out in front of you, you can see how much thought and creativity and planning went into just the scenery and props and that’s before scripts and acting.

One thing I came away with was an appreciation for the people behind the scenes. The whole thing is a complete work of art!!

Butter Beer

This is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it!

Butter Beer and other food and drink items that you see in the movies are available to buy and try which is pretty cool.

There is a gift shop and café at the half way point with indoor and outdoor seating.

The Butter Beer isn’t cheap so I would suggest just buying 1 and all of you try it as you might end up wasting your money on it for those that find they don’t like it.

I’ll be completely honest here, its expensive so make sure you stick to a budget, its so easy to get carried away with so many enticing things around you especially in the gift shops.

No broomstick flying indoors.

This place is truly magical, make sure your wearing comfy footwear and take your time, there are hundred if not thousands of things to see here and if you are a big Harry Potter fan like we are you will have an amazing time immerged in the world of wizards and sorcery.

Below is a little video highlighting some of my favourite parts of the tour, have a watch of it and maybe share it with a few of your muggle friends to see if they would like to take a journey into the magic and mayhem of the world of Harry Potter.
